Brian Cowen | The Irish Parliament has elected the former deputy prime minister and finance minister Brian Cowen as the republic's new prime minister.
The 48-year-old Cowen won 88 to 76 in Dail Eireann, Ireland's parliament.
He received support from all three parties in the government of his predecessor, Bertie Ahern, who stepped down Tuesday after 11 years in power.
He said his top priority in coming weeks was to lead a successful referendum on the Lisbon Treaty which would set up a framework for constitutional amendments in the bloc.
The Republic of Ireland is the only country holding a referendum on the issue.
Cowen was expected to reshuffle the Cabinet later Wednesday.
