Veltroni urges voters to "turn the page" on the older generation. | Polls have opened in Italy's general elections with conservative leader Silvio Berlusconi expected to win a third premiership.
Voting across Italy lasts until 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Sunday and resumes Monday until early afternoon. Exit polls are expected at the close of the polls.
Many Italians have felt a sense of decline and disillusionment toward a political class that has failed to solve the nation's problems. The election is being held under a discredited election law seen as fostering government instability.
The main opponent of the 71-year-old conservative billionaire Berlusconi is Walter Veltroni of the center-left Democratic Party. The 52-year-old Veltroni is a former Rome mayor.
The intellectual and compromise-minded Veltroni has criss-crossed the country by bus, emulating US Republican presidential candidate John McCain's Straight Talk Express, urging voters to "turn the page" on the older generation represented by Berlusconi.
